Post #53. On The Importance of Self-Trust

A subject that lies close to my heart is self-trust.

Self-trust is when we know what’s best for us, we say to ourselves that we will do it and then we… do it.

Self-trust is when you do what you say you will do…

Self-trust precedes self-leadership…

And…

Leading oneself well precedes leading others well.

See…

We can have all the knowledge in the world, but without the power to act upon the knowledge, we become delusional and stagnant in our growth.

We may have summoned enormous amounts information about what is good na bad… But we seem to continue making continuos excuses, to explain why things are in a certain way and why we behave in a certain way.

We say things like:

– It just is like this.

– I am like this.

– It’s impossible to change…

We seem to have an infinite capacity for self-deception…

MY STORY WITH SELF-TRUST
As I was growing up, I remember how I thought:
“I will never be strong enough to resist this temptation.”

I felt as if my soul, who knew what actions was right, which I would be proud of, was surrounded by a wall that was crumbling…

See… There’s a lot of things we do that we afterwards regret…

That may mean eating too much food, watching too much tv, too much sitting, to little exercise…

We all know what these things are for us… In many cases, it’s not a matter of “not being informed”.

As Derek Sivers put so well:

“If information was the solution, we would all be billionaires with perfect abs.”

So what’s the secret ingredient to growth & achievement of any nature?

The ingredient that is missing very often is self-trust…

CULTIVATING SELF-TRUST
The goal is to reach a point where you do what you say you will do, what you now you will not regret, no matter how it feels in the moment…

This can be reached…

Self-trust is not a fixed character trait that you either have or you don’t… It’s a skill that can be worked on… It’s a muscle…

And like any muscle, if we want it to become stronger and more useful, we start small…

DREAM BIG. START SMALL. ACT NOW.

To cultivate self-trust in a fun way, practice giving yourself simple little orders, and then carry them out no matter how you feel.
Could be:
– wash the dished after the meal
– doing a 5 min workout
– going for a walk
– or being a bit kinder to your loved ones

The key here is really to start small…. As we’ve talked about, when we have recognised the power of “carrying little things well”, we will take these things more seriously…

We understand that it’s the practice field, for the bigger things in life.

By doing this daily practice of telling ourselves what to do, we recognise our power to choose…

This essential power that can never be taken away, only forgotten.

Questions about self-trust?

Would love to answer.

I mean…

I’ve been there…

I know what it’s like to feel powerless…

I know you can change…. I really know this… No matter how weak you feel today… I know you can become stronger…

Because I’ve done it…

And the pursuit of self-trust is limitless….

As we evolve and grow, we will be challenged with bigger and more difficult decisions where we need self trust in order to stay true… and be who we want to be…

But, my encouragement to you is to start now.

With love + respect.

To your greatness.
