Post #82. How To Be An Essentialist

Energy Focus
“If you don’t prioritise your life, someone else will.”

– Greg McKeown

I had a conversation the other day with a successful author, coach & CEO of a nutrition company.

In order to be able to help in some way maybe, I asked him what he’s struggling with most in his life… I mean, we all have a struggle… And you never know if you might know someone or know something that might help.

His challenge was that he felt spread thin, that he has to many projects going on and many opportunities, and difficult to choose the vital few from the trivial many…

It made me think of a book a read a few years ago that really resonated with me, which was called Essentialism by Greg McKeown.

This post is part a thank you note to Patrick Wahlberg and also some reflections on this issue of having to much going on…

THE DISCIPLINED PURSUIT OF LESS BUT BETTER
The goal here is to work on only those things that truly matter to you.

The goal here is the disciplined pursuit of the projects, ide, platform, mission that are truly vital. The ones you truly love & has the most impact on the lives of others.

WHY WE NEED ESSENTIALISM?

So, let’s say you got inspired to take action in one direction. It goes well. You gain momentum and people start to notice your skill and gusto. You achieved success! Great… Now countless opportunities arise due to your reputation as a “go getter”…

You jump on the opportunities because they are fun and it makes sense to “have an impact”…

But one day you find yourself stressed out and spread to thin…
This is when you’ve entered into the zone of pursuing the trivial many, instead of the vital few.

Here’s the steps:
1. Momentum
2. Success
3. More opportunities
4. The undisciplined pursuit of more
5. Spread to thin

SOLUTION
So you might think: What should one do?

Simple: Pursue less, but better.

By asking yourself questions such as:
What is the #1 priority in my life?

Remember:
“If you don’t prioritise your life, someone else will.”

McKeowns approach to leading an essentialists life is to:

1. Explore
“Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.” – Thomas Jefferson

Explore what what you want your life to consist of… What is truly important to you? What do you absolutely love doing? What makes your soul dance, your heart sing?

Be specific.

Now pinpoint the essence of what makes you a) come alive and allow you to have b) the greatest possible impact on the lives of others

2. Eliminate
“The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials.”
– Lin Yutang

Systematically eliminate all the non-essentials in your life and make more space for the essence and go to step 3.

Think like Michelangelo:

“I saw the angle in the marble and carved until I set him free.”
– Michelangelo

3. Execute
Define daily actions that move forward and deepen your essential few.
Take daily baby steps of integrity.

With love.
